A Message From The President
By Rae Saulino
Hello everyone! We are well into 2019, have put away our Holiday Decorations and have settled into our winter routines. Keeping in touch with all of you is one of my New Year’s Resolutions. What better way to do that but by reaching out to all OCREA members via The Wavelet. Many of you have commented on how great The Wavelet looks digitally and some are saving the issues on their computers for future reference.
I’m attempting to be more techno-savy as I’ve discovered how quickly I can get information to the Officers and Members of the Executive Board and to YOU, OCREA members by using technology.
So much is changing rapidly. We have new medical coverage and you’ll find postings regarding Health Benefits posted on the Web by Jane Cavallaro, Health Benefits Chair. We have a wonderful March Luncheon planned by Janice Sovinee and Frank Sovinee who never stop planning from one luncheon to another. We have a list of trips planned by our Travel Chair Maryann Tomborello and a cyber security workshop planned by Peggy Keane.
The NJREA Review keeps all of us up-to-date on important issues and we’ve been sending alerts via Mailchimp to you as soon as the news breaks. One of our last Mailchimp was regarding a recall of two popular medications that Jane wrote about and Jinny Hoden sent to all of us via Mailchimp. This is a fantastic way to get important information to everyone at the same time very efficiently.
You will find information regarding OCREA’s upcoming elections in this issue and many articles of interest written by various members of the Executive Board.
Many of us have been attending meetings with the active educational staff members to provide them with information to become Life Members while they are still working. In this way, they could pay on a monthly basis and their dues will not increase. I became a Life member when I was a young teacher and have never regretted it. If you know an active teacher, para professional, bus driver, cafeteria worker, secretary, etc., encourage them to remain active by becoming a Life Member. Membership provides you with benefits you never considered: a free consultation with an attorney, discounts on cars, appliances, etc through Buyers’ Edge to name a few. Plus, the NJEA and NJREA professional journals which report on current events that affect all of us, informs us about Medicare benefits and provides you with a host of benefits depending on your situation and issues.
So, attend our Luncheons, join us on Trips, read The Wavelet, the Website and the Mailchimps that come your way.
Keeping up with issues that are second nature to us helps us keep abreast of what we need to know when we need to know it. Being retired doesn’t mean forgetting about what we did professionally.
We recently hosted the Lakewood High School Orchestra and everyone loved the exciting performance put on by these young students. There were smiles on everyone’s faces and when the students interacted with the members, you all became mentors and encouraged them to continue their education. What a fun time for all!
